How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage: Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100) = Tip amount. Add that to the bill for your total. On an $86.40 bill at 18%, that’s $15.55 tip, for a $101.95 total.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is common. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more “correct,” but most people tip on the total printed at the bottom of the check — the difference is usually small.
